ajc architects is proud to partner with DHM Design to complete a new prototype duplex housing unit at Big Bend National Park, nestled in the breathtaking Chisos Basin.

This project began with the thoughtful demolition of an existing residential structure originally built in 1964 during the historic Mission 66 program. In its place, a modern one-story prototype duplex now stands — purpose-built to serve the needs of park staff and the surrounding community for decades to come.

The new duplex features two mirrored units, each with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, for a total of four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Designed to complement the natural beauty and rugged character of Big Bend, the new structure represents a significant upgrade from the original 1,442 square foot, three-bedroom residence it replaces.

Located approximately one mile north-northwest of the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, this project reflects our team’s commitment to thoughtful, context-sensitive design — honoring the legacy of one of America’s most iconic national parks while delivering modern, functional housing in one of the most remote and spectacular landscapes in the country.

We are grateful for the collaboration with DHM Design and the opportunity to contribute to the stewardship of Big Bend National Park.
