we are ajc

Our mission is to bring to everyone we encounter a process of discovering, building, and sustaining relationships that create harmony through architecture, earth, place, and time.

  • In a way, I see this new building as the culmination of a long family dream to settle in the land of freedom,

I also see the building as another step in our goal to make Petzl the global benchmark for innovative climbing equipment and vertical rope access solutions.

Paul Petzl, President and CEO Petzl International

overview

ajc architects was established in 1991 with an unwavering commitment to provide innovative design solutions to our clients. We have crafted an architectural practice that is passionate about relationships, sound design, and the environment. While ajc’s portfolio spans a diverse range of project types, we are most proud of those that provide solutions which improve the human condition, as a whole.

Our ultimate project is not a specific building type, but a client who is involved and committed to quality design, sensitive to site, engaged in sustainable design solutions, open minded to clean, simple, cleverly coordinated details, appreciates coordination, loves dogs, and will be a long-term friend at the end of the project.

In addition to our passion for improving the human condition, our team’s expertise, technical skill, and design approach is always well-aligned with our clients’ core values. ajc employs the brightest,  most hard-working architects and designers, and we partners with the finest engineers in the region. Our team is dedicated to thoroughly and quickly exploring all necessary possibilities in order to ensure that we’re working toward the best design solution… and we won’t settle until it’s been achieved. ajc believes that environmentally responsible design is good design, and we incorporate sustainable strategies into all that we do – in our designs, and in the way we operate and maintain our office. Our design work has afforded ajc unparalleled experience in implementing innovative, cost-effective, sustainable strategies into buildings and sites throughout the U.S. The long list of ajc projects designed and completed over the last decade, which are LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, or soon to be is testament to ajc’s commitment, standards, and abilities.

process

Our design process is iterative, based on collaboration with our clients and our team of well-qualified consultants. We make use of a combination of introspective hand sketches, analogue mock-ups, digital modeling, and photo-realistic rendering. Our creative team utilizes the most cutting-edge tools available. As with all of our projects, our clients’ building projects will be developed with 3-Dimensional building modeling software (BIM). This tool will allow for real-time modification, powerful collaboration and immediate communication of building development. The plan organization, optimal structural layouts, infrastructure requirements, architectural image and experiential qualities- including environmental considerations such as sun/shadow analysis, etc. – are all studied and refined simultaneously – from conceptual design through construction documentation.

who we are

We are creatives. Lovers of line and form; design-people-place.

  • The building [Tracy Aviary Visitor Center] is a stunning piece of architecture and makes a positive contribution to Liberty Park. In time, I’m confident the building will become recognized as one of Salt Lake’s finest.

    Tim Brown, Director, Tracy Aviary

sustainable design

At the core of ajc’s character is an abiding and long held reverence for the environment. We believe that environmentally responsible design is good design. ajc brings unique insight on innovative and cost effective sustainable strategies to a broad range of project types and diverse climates. This insight allows design solutions that range from simple and harmonious architectural responses to cutting edge environmental design and technology. ajc appreciates that our clients’ projects are unique and we work closely with owners and stakeholders to understand the varied needs and goals for sustainability. ajc engages projects with a creative process that comprehensively analyzes the inherent opportunities associated with a site, a structure, and people. The result will be design strategies that are appropriate to a given budget, schedule, and mission, and will ultimately be an integral part of a better environment.

Given the extensive sustainable design experience that ajc has, we are familiar with the rigorous documentation of such standardized evaluating organizations as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), The Sustainable Sites Initiative, SPiRiT (Sustainable Project Rating Tool), and various city and state standards such as the Utah DFCM High Performance Building Rating System. Because of our familiarity with these processes, we can assure the client a seamless experience that allows the documentation to be a tool to better environmental design, rather than a cumbersome exercise.
